Thursday Beginner Bellydance September- No Experience Necessary!
Instructor: Sacha Platt
Class meets Thursdays 8:00pm-8:55pm
Bellydance is one of the oldest forms of dance and has been growing in popularity all over the world in recent years. In the Middle East, the dance is more commonly called "Raqs Sharqi." It is believed that the dance first came to America in 1893 at the Chicago World's Fair. During that time, the Hollywood film industry sought to capitalize on the peaked interest in this new exotic dance form, and this contributed to the transformation of the dance from a folk dance that was passed on from generation to generation into a performance art. In beginner bellydance, students will receive an introduction to the very basic foundations of belly dance which are common across the various styles of the dance. The class begins with an introduction to optimal posture and alignment which will continue to be emphasized throughout the course. Students will learn torso, chest, and hip isolations in order to build both sharp and percussive as well as gentle and flowing movements. Traveling steps and arm patterns will be covered, and musicality and cultural origins will also be discussed. No dance experience necessary.
